Achilles' Anger

Why is Achilles angry? What actions has he taken so far in the story? Do you think he's justified in being angry? What is the result of his anger so far? What quotations support your ideas?

Personally, I think that Achilles is completely entitled to be angry about his situation. In essence, he's stuck between a rock and a hard place, because his troops are at the mercy of Apollo, but the king he serves (who is also responsible for Apollo's rage) refuses to desist his actions. His last solution, to kill Agamemnon, is denied by the very gods.

He IS entitled to be upset and frustrated. Who wouldn't be if the gods said "You'll be rewarded later"?

(I was missing yesterday, so my knowledge is a little limited.)

In my experience, the anger that Achilles is feeling is perfectly reasonable; he has been forced by higher power, and his commands tell him to kill a man protected by the gods, Agamemnon.

(I am out of time and will put in a quote for this later.)

Achilles is mad because of Agamemnon's futile attempts and that Agamemnon took his women, Briseis. This made Achilles feel insulted. Yes Achilles is justified because the king is just taking what ever he wants because he is greedy, selfish.

Quote: “Father Zeus, if I have ever helped you in word or deed among the immortals, grant me this prayer….”
when Achilles mother tries to comfort his anger.
Quote: "Sing, goddess, of Achilles ruinous anger
Which brought ten thousand pains to the Achaeans,
And cast the souls of many stalwart heroes
To Hades, and their bodies to the dogs
And birds of prey."
describes Achilles anger.

yea good stuff huh. Free of charge today, cuz the SENIOR is tired.

I think that Achilles is angry because he's in the situation where he has to get angry. Achilles is forced by power that is greater than his. His troops are backing down from Apollo and the king refuses to help him until later. He wants to kill Agamemnon.

Quote:
Rage - Goddess, sing the rage of Peleus' son Achilles,
murderous, doomed, that cost the Achaeans countless losses
hurling down to the House of Death so many sturdy souls,
great fighter's souls, but made their bodies carrion
feats for the dogs and birds
and the will of Zeus was moving towards its end.

achilles's anger is very much justified because he is irritated by agamamnons attempts to take briseis from achilles and that really pissed. i thinkthat achilles has every right to be mad!

Achilles is mad because Agamemnon wants Achilles' prize, and Achilles doesn't think he deserves it.

I agree with Hannah. Achilles has every single right to be mad. I know i would if someone tried to steal my woman. The whole thing could have been avoided if Agamemnon could have found another woman to go after.

I agree with Chris and Hannah that Hector is in a situation that requires you to get a little aggravated. He is totally justified. If he is asked to do something by the gods, he is pretty much obligated to do it. He obviously has many internal conflicts.

I think Achilles is really made because he believes what Agamemnon is doing is totally wrong. Agamemnon has more power than Achilles.Achilles is also mad because Agamemnon stole the girl and won't give her back even though Achilles said you'll get a prize if you give the girl back but Agamemnon does not believe that. And Apollo is running around and destroying everything. And the king is not doing anything. He just wants to hurt Agamemnon.

Quote: Achilles scowled at him and answered, "You are steeped in insolence and lust of gain

Quote:Then Agamemnon said, "Achilles, valiant though you be, you shall not thus outwit me. You shall not overreach and you shall not persuade me. Are you to keep your own prize, while I sit tamely under my loss and give up the girl at your bidding?

i would agree with Hannah.Achilles should made because Agamemnon has something that does not belong to him.

I think that Archilles is angry because Agamemnon took his women, Briseis. He felt betrayed because the king, knowing he is a king thinks he can do whatever and in that case, he took what Archilles loved the most, which was his women.

quote; "Achilles, valiant though you be, you shall not thus outwit me. You shall not overreach and you shall not persuade me. Are you to keep your own prize, while I sit tamely under my loss and give up the girl at your bidding?"

I totally agreed with everyone's comment about why Achilles is mad at Agamemnon. The quote in the book that stands out the most to state Achilles madness was, "I will be there in person at your tents to take Briseis in all her beauty, your own prize" (pg.333. Emma's quote is a great example of Achilles and Agagmemnon and I agree with her.

The cause of Achilles anger is Agamemnon. It was his greed and stubborn nature that caused the entire problem. Agamemnon had in his possession a captive girl name named Chryseis. Chryseis was the daughter of a Trojan priest of Apollo. The priest had come to Agamemnon to ask for his daughter back, offering a valuable prize in exchange. Despite his offer, Agamemnon refused. This displeased the god Apollo. Apollo came down from Olympus and to punish Agamemnon for his greedy and unjust treatment of one of his loyal followers he began to fire upon the armies of Agamemnon. So Achilles went to Agamemnon to attempt to convince him to give the girl back knowing it was the only way to stop Apollo. Achilles offered Agamemnon great rewards, including large portions of what they would gain for sacking Troy, if he would just give up Chryseis, but Agamemnon refused. “Trying to cheat me,” Agamemnon says to Achilles, “What do you want? To cling to your own prize while I sit calmly by – empty-handed here?”(330). His stubborn greed prevents Achilles from successfully convincing him. In the end Agamemnon return the girl just in order to save the troops from further slaughter, and as past of the bargain Agamemnon takes Achilles’ girl Briseis. This leaves Achilles furious.
Achilles is right to be upset. Agamemnon is obviously being overly greedy. He already gets the largest share of any loot, even though he does no fighting. He is already a king and ruler, so he basically has everything anyone could want. And on top of that, just in order to get him to save his own troops, Achilles has to give him some of his own prizes.
